On one particular day, there was a boy who went to the beach and to his surprise there were a lot of starfish on the shore. The boy started walking and picking up the starfish one by one and throwing it back to the sea. While he was doing that, there was an old man nearby observing what he was doing. The old man couldn't understand why the boy did that. Why did he bother picking up the starfish and throwing them back into the sea when he knew that every time the waves come, it will just wash the starfish back to shore? It’s just a fruitless effort. The old man approached him and asked.

"Why do you bother throwing back the starfish when they would just be washed back to shore? What different does it make? It’s only a waste of time,” said the man.

The boy replied, “It may not be much different to you or me but it makes a whole lot different to that one starfish who is already thrown in the water and doesn't get washed back to shore."

3B starfishes @ singapore poly on 28 & 30 June

3b students were separated into several groups .
each groups had the experience to feel the school's ambience.
the classes and lectures had was very much different from our school's
compound and the trainers was very good to all of us .
among the courses held was the "formidable earth landslide" in which ,
after the course , several of our classmates were told to make a presentation.
it was a two days course and all of us had benefited from it (:

well, we miss the SP's macdonald where we had our stomach filled before the
lessons start . As the courses had ended , i hope you people will continue
to strive hard and not only make 3B proud but yourself too (:

we wish that we will have another chance to go to the poly again !

as you people know , ms low went back to NIE . seriously , yesterday was really a sad day for all of us to see her leave. we bought her presents - flowers , a hairpin with her name & a BIG card which all of our signatures are on it . ms low is always a very gentle teacher , even if we does not do her homework , she will never scold us and will talk to us with a very nice way .

we took some class photos with her & ms waheeda . sooner or later , it will be posted. we wish ms low all the best in whatever things she do & hope that she will not forget our class 3B . im sure that we'll all meet up one day somewhere!

sorry that we are always so noisy in class and made you angry . we HOPE that you will come back to west spring & teach us again.

What is avian influenza (bird flu)?

Bird flu is an infection caused by avian (bird) influenza (flu) viruses . These flu viruses occur naturally among birds. Wild birds worldwide carry the viruses in their intestines, but usually do not get sick from them. However, bird flu is very contagious among birds and can make some domesticated birds, including chickens, ducks, and turkeys, very sick and kill them.
Infection with avian influenza viruses in domestic poultry causes two main forms of disease that are distinguished by low and high extremes of virulence. The ?low pathogenic? form may go undetected and usually causes only mild symptoms (such as ruffled feathers and a drop in egg production). However, the ?highly pathogenic? form spreads more rapidly through flocks of poultry. This form may cause disease that affects multiple internal organs and has a mortality rate that can reach 90-100%, often within 48 hours.

How does avian influenza spread among birds?

Infected birds shed influenza virus in their saliva, nasal secretions, and feces. Susceptible birds become infected when they have contact with contaminated excretions or with surfaces that are contaminated with excretions or secretions. Domesticated birds may become infected with avian influenza virus through direct contact with infected waterfowl or other infected poultry or through contact with surfaces (such as dirt or cages) or materials (such as water or feed) that have been contaminated with the virus.

Do bird flu viruses infect humans?

During an outbreak of avian influenza among poultry, there is a possible risk to people who have direct or close contact with infected birds or with surfaces that have been contaminated with secretions and excretions from infected birds.

What are the symptoms of avian influenza in humans?

Symptoms of avian influenza in humans have ranged from typical human influenza-like symptoms (fever, cough, sore throat, and muscle aches) to eye infections, pneumonia, severe respiratory diseases (such as acute respiratory distress syndrome), and other severe and life-threatening complications. The symptoms of avian influenza may depend on which specific virus subtype and strain caused the infection

i would like to share some study tips & homework
tips that are useful
homework tips
*Stay organize! When it comes to studying you will be glad if you are organized.
*Start studying for a test a week in advance.
*Start studying at least two days before a quiz
*If you find you have any questions while studying, write them down and remember to ask your teacher. Even if it is the night before the test or quiz, come a little early and ask. Most teachers are there early.
*Try making a sample quiz OR test from your notes
*Make diagrams, charts, etc.
*Rewrite your notes
*Get together with friends in your class and form a study group. You can help each other understand the material.

homework tips
*To start, take out your assignment pad, or where ever you write down your HW, and look it over.
*Do the harder assignments first and then do the easier ones this way, if you get tired doing HW, you only have to finish the easier assignments.
*If you have to memorize something write it out four times and then test yourself.
*If it takes you more than 30 minutes to complete an HW assignment, talk to your teacher for some extra help.
*If you are completing your homework assignment in 15 minutes or less then you either very smart and need to be challenged more or you are cutting corners so when the class is checking homework pay close attention.
*Remember that if you do your HW right, you will be better prepared for tests and quizzes.
